Our story

In 1975, the founding physician of Southern Indiana Surgery, Dr. Daly Walker, left his former office and opened his own private practice in Columbus, Indiana. He fulfilled a great need and provided the community with quality general surgery service. Southern Indiana Surgery (SIS) was incorporated in 1976.

1987

Dr. Greg Millis joined SIS as the second general surgeon, bringing innovative thoracic surgery skills and business acumen. SIS moved to a larger office at the corner of 17th Street and Gladstone.

1991-1993

Dr. Fredrick Shedd joined SIS. He brought with him valuable innovation and skill in breast cancer treatment and peripheral vascular surgery. Dr. C.O. Weddle merged his private practice with SIS bringing his expansive general surgery experience.

1994-1995

In 1994 SIS moved to the Hawcreek Medical Office Building on CRH campus. Columbus native, Dr. Michael Dorenbusch, joined SIS as the first residency-trained laparoscopic surgeon. Dr. Walker was appointed chief of staff at CRH.

1997

Dr. David Thompson joined SIS and began providing services at ST. Vincent Jennings Community Hospital.

2001-2002

Dr. David Lee joined the SIS group providing general surgery services. Dr. Walker lead the development of a new inpatient hospice center, Hospice Center of South Central Indiana (HSCI). Dr. Daly Walker and Dr. C.O. Weddle retired.

2003-2004

Dr. Douglas Roese joined SIS as the first fellowship-trained vascular surgeon. Dr. Shedd directed the major redesign of the Breast Health Center to offer more innovative treatments for cancer. Anita Norris, NP joined SIS and began an efficient and effective colon screening program for the community.

2005

Dr. David Lee spearheaded the opening of the Bariatric Center at Columbus Regional Health. The program continues to thrive today.

2008-2010

The devastating "500 Year Flood" closed CRH for nearly five months. SIS performed surgeries at CSC and nearby hospitals to continue to provide necessary services to patients. A personal loss for SIS, Dr. Greg Millis passed away in 2009.

2011-2013

2011 - Dr. Doug Roese assumes the position of Co-director for the Wound Care Center at CRH.

2013 - Dr. Jason Christie joined SIS to expand vascular services. Dr. Justin Burdick joined SIS to practice general surgery.

2015-2017

2015 - Dr. Jason Christie appointed director of CRH vascular services. SIS celebrates 40 years of "Community Focus & Exceptional Care". Dr. Shedd retired after 26 years with SIS.

2017 - SIS opened a new fully accredited Vascular Ultrasound Lab to provide high quality non-invasive testing.

2020-2021

The Vascular Physicians move services to new location opening the new Vascular Center of Southern Indiana Surgery and a state-of-the-art office based interventional suite, one of the few in the state.

2021 - SIS celebrated 45 years of Exceptional Community Care. Dr. Doug Roese appointed Medical Director for the CRH Wound Care Center.

2023

To fulfill growing needs, the general surgeons and staff of SIS and the Bariatric Center formally departed from SIS and became CRH General Surgery and the Weight Loss Institute of CRH.

The Vascular Center of Southern Indiana Surgery continues to serve the community and surrounding areas with exceptional vascular care.
